Somali president Farmaajo Cancels Cecafa Finals To Respond To Somalia Floods. #SOMALIA

Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has cancelled a scheduled trip to Bujumbura to give support to the under 17 national football team in the Sunday Cecafa championship finals to respond to the current flooding that has hit parts of the country. In a stunning upset Somalia Under-17 Soccer team beats favourites Uganda 1-0 to reach CECAFA Cup Final. Somalia beat Kenya, drew Burundi and was awarded 3-0 after Ethiopia fielded ineligible players against the Ocean Stars. Somalia plays Tanzania in the final on Sunday.

A source in Villa Somalia confirmed to The press  that Farmaajo had called off the Saturday trip.

Somalia nationals had raised concern over reports that the President was scheduled to fly to Burundi while thousands were displaced in the ongoing floods.

The Somali Govt has appointed 22-member emergency response team in the wake of disastrous floods in Beledweyne town. Tens of thousands of families fled their homes due to heavy rains and Shabelle river overtopping its banks; agencies warned about possible outbreak of diseases.

Regional leaders appeal for immediate assistance after floods displaced tens of thousands of people in south-central regions. Heavy rains continue to fall as water level rise. Leader of Hirshabelle region Mohamed Abdi Ware spoke to media in a flooded neighbourhood in Beledweyne.

Somalia Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire on Monday formed a 22 member committee to respond to the effects of flooding that has hit the riverine regions of the country affecting thousands of people, Radio Dalsan reports.

Khaire convened an emergency meeting a day after the Hiraan region town of Beledweyne was submerged and appointed the Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled to head the team.

More than 427,000 people have been affected as of 26 April and of these nearly 175,000 have been displaced as a result of the flash and river flooding in Hirshabelle, South West and Jubaland states as well as Banadir region, according to data collected by humanitarian partners.
